President Chakwera to Accept MEC’s Final Outcome
Malawi President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has assured Malawians that he will fully respect and accept the outcome of the September 16 presidential election, once the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) officially announces the results this afternoon.
Speaking during a nationally televised address at 12:00 noon today, ahead of MEC’s scheduled announcement at 2:00 pm, President Chakwera urged calm and patience among Malawians, stressing that peace must prevail regardless of the outcome.
“I want to make it clear to every Malawian that I will accept the results that MEC will announce. This election has been in the hands of the people, and the final decision now rests in the hands of the Commission,” Chakwera said.
He added that democracy thrives when leaders and citizens alike submit to the rule of law and respect the will of the people.
“Democracy means that sometimes we win, and sometimes we lose. But in all situations, we must put Malawi first. I call upon all Malawians, whether in cities or villages, to maintain peace and unity as we await the official announcement,” he said.
President Chakwera further acknowledged the tension that has surrounded the electoral period, but emphasized that violence or disorder would not solve anything.
> “I know emotions are high, but violence will never be the answer. We must remain a peaceful nation. We have one Malawi, and it belongs to all of us,” he stressed.
The President concluded by pledging to support the transition process should the results not favor him, reaffirming his commitment to democratic values.
MEC is expected to declare the winner of the September 16 elections at 2:00 pm at the National Tally Centre in Lilongwe.
