A historic weekend awaits the people of Mzimba North as Dr. Catherine Mzumara, Vice President for the North in the United Transformation Movement (UTM), gears up to launch a K15 million football trophy aimed at transforming the landscape of community sports in the region.
The launch ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, 19 July 2025, at Thumbi Primary School Ground, starting at 12:00 noon. The event is expected to draw a large crowd from all corners of the constituency and beyond.
The tournament—one of the most heavily funded grassroots football initiatives in the area’s history—will bring together teams from Bwengu, Thumbi, Enukweni, Chizawula, Embombeni, and other surrounding zones.
“This is more than just a trophy—it is a symbol of belief in our youth,” said Dr. Mzumara. “We are investing in their talent, their discipline, and their dreams. Football has the power to unite, inspire, and open doors.”

A Boost to Grassroots Development
Local football enthusiasts and community leaders have applauded the initiative, describing it as a much-needed intervention to energize youth engagement and promote healthy competition.
“For a long time, rural teams have lacked meaningful opportunities. This trophy will breathe new life into our local football scene,” said Patrick Mhone, a community coach in Chizawula.
The tournament is expected to run over several months, culminating in a grand finale with prizes, medals, and recognition for outstanding players and teams.
Bringing Communities Together
Beyond football, the trophy is also seen as a tool for social cohesion, bringing people from various backgrounds together under a shared banner of pride and unity.
“This is how communities grow stronger when we rally behind something positive,” said Rhoda Kampira, a youth leader in Bwengu. “We are not just watching matches; we are building bridges.”
The event will also feature traditional dances, music performances, and motivational talks. Organizers say the goal is to create a vibrant, family-friendly atmosphere that celebrates culture, talent, and community spirit.

A Leader Investing in People
Known for her grassroots engagement, Dr. Mzumara has continuously emphasized development that places people at the center.
“We cannot talk about national transformation without investing in local ambition,” she said. “This trophy is a stepping stone for greater things to come for Mzimba North.”
