Principal Group Village Headman (GVH) Ganje of Rumphi District recently hosted an end-of-year party for 90 elderly people in his area, aimed at celebrating and supporting less-privileged members of the community.

In an interview, Principal GVH Ganje explained that the event was organized to appreciate elderly people who often face challenges in accessing basic necessities. He said the initiative is a continuation of a long-standing family tradition passed down from his father and grandfather.

“We are simply continuing what our father and grandfather used to do for the elderly. We believe that charity begins at home, and through this, elders feel that they are part of the family,” said Ganje.

He added that such gatherings help promote unity and preserve cultural values, particularly among younger generations. “This is a sign that we are working towards a common goal. At the same time, children and grandchildren are able to understand and appreciate our culture,” he noted.

Principal GVH Ganje further encouraged people in his area to cultivate a spirit of sharing, regardless of how little they may have.

One of the elderly beneficiaries, Jean Kumwenda, expressed gratitude for the gesture, describing the event as a blessing to many. “We know the Ganje family as a clan that believes in giving, and this event clearly reflects who they are. There are many elderly people in their homes who had nothing to eat today, so inviting us here is truly a blessing,” said Kumwenda.

Supporting Kumwenda’s remarks, Liforce Mhango urged other families with the means to emulate the Ganje family’s example, noting that their actions reflect true leadership. “The Ganje family has demonstrated what true leadership is by inviting the less privileged to share a meal with them. They are also the ones who welcomed us and allocated us places to settle,” Mhango said.

Mhango further highlighted that the initiative was previously championed by Joel Ganje Mhango and expressed appreciation that Chance Ganje Mhango is continuing the tradition.

The end-of-year celebration attracted more than 200 people of all ages. One head of cattle was slaughtered, and rice was served. The event began in the morning with breakfast and continued throughout the day.
