The President of the Football Association of Malawi (FAM), Fleetwood Haiya, has reaffirmed his commitment to using football as a platform for national development following his visit to the Malawi Embassy in Egypt.

Haiya, who recently concluded the CAF General Assembly, took the opportunity to engage with Malawian diplomats in Cairo on critical issues affecting both football and the broader economy.

“During our discussions, we explored several key topics, including football collaborations and business opportunities,” Haiya stated. “One of the major areas of interest was the potential expansion of Malawi’s tobacco exports to Egypt through additional agents. We also discussed the possibility of importing fertilizer, a crucial commodity for our agro-based economy.”

He emphasized that football is more than just a sport—it can serve as a tool for national progress. “As Malawians, we have a responsibility to support the government in any way we can. The visibility that football provides can be leveraged not only for the growth of the sport but also for economic advancement,” he added.

Haiya expressed his gratitude to Her Excellency Ambassador Catherine Nurujean Kunje and the entire embassy staff for their warm hospitality and fruitful discussions.

His visit underscores FAM’s broader vision of integrating football with national development efforts, showing that the sport can be a driving force for economic opportunities beyond the pitch.
