Government, UN Women Advocate for Better Maternal Health Ahead of International Women’s Day

The Deputy Minister of Gender, Halima Daud, today visited Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) in Lilongwe, launching a series of activities leading up to International Women’s Day on March 8. The visit, conducted in partnership with UN Women and the Malawi Red Cross, aimed to highlight the importance of maternal health and gender equality.
Speaking at the event, Daud stressed the need to support women in hospitals who cannot participate in public celebrations.
“Women in hospitals may not be able to join the celebrations, so bringing the spirit of Women’s Day to them is essential,” she said.
During her visit to the Kangaroo Mother Care section, Daud reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening maternal health services. She acknowledged the role of partners such as the Red Cross and UN Women in ensuring quality healthcare for women.
“Preparations for International Women’s Day are well underway, and as a ministry, we have already started with various activities,” she stated.
UN Women Country Representative Letty Chiwara highlighted the direct link between maternal health and gender equality, emphasizing that safe motherhood contributes to safer communities.
“Gender equality is a human rights issue. If we ensure safe motherhood, we build stronger, healthier communities,” she said.
Chiwara recognized Malawi’s progress in maternal healthcare but noted that further improvements are necessary.
“While strides have been made, we can do more to enhance maternal health services and ensure that every woman receives the care she needs,” she added.
She underscored the need for collaboration between men and women in advancing maternal health and gender equality.
“Safe motherhood is not a privilege—it is a right. We must work together to ensure no mother dies while giving life,” Chiwara emphasized, commending the Deputy Minister for her dedication.
International Women’s Day activities will continue in Blantyre, featuring celebrations of women’s achievements and training sessions involving representatives from 65 sectors.
This year’s theme is “Collectively, We Can Accelerate Action for Gender Equality.”
