Malawi Peace and Unity Commission Condemns Acts of Violence

The Malawi Peace and Unity Commission has strongly condemned the recent acts of violence occurring across the country ahead of the September general elections.
In a statement signed by its Chairperson, Impi Bishop Mary Nkosi, the Commission expressed deep concern over the escalating violence linked to demonstrations, warning that such incidents pose a serious threat to national peace and stability.
Nkosi highlighted several incidents, including the vandalism of vehicles belonging to Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) parliamentarians at Parliament, the stoning of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) vehicles at Nselema in Machinga, and the attack on the convoy of AFORD President Enock Chihana in Lilongwe.
“We are equally disturbed by the violence reported at Nselema Trading Centre in Machinga, where unknown individuals stoned several vehicles, including one carrying a member of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).”
“The attack on Honourable Enock Chihana, President of AFORD, is also deeply concerning. These incidents highlight the growing threat of violence and intimidation, especially as the September Tripartite Elections approach.”
Nkosi has called upon all stakeholders to reject violence and engage in constructive dialogue to resolve differences peacefully. She urged political parties, civil society organizations, and citizens to prioritize unity and tolerance for a free, fair, and peaceful electoral process.
