Amid mounting frustration from customers, the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) has acknowledged ongoing delays in meter upgrades, a situation that has left some households in darkness for months.

ESCOM Public Relations Officer Peter Kanjere admitted that supply chain challenges have hindered the rollout of the Token Identifier Project, which aims to upgrade prepaid meters. He cited delays in the delivery of new prepaid meters from suppliers as a key issue but assured customers that solutions are being implemented.

“We are assisting all affected customers while we wait for the necessary equipment,” Kanjere stated.

He noted that 98 percent of prepaid meters have already been upgraded, with efforts underway to replace the remaining non-compliant units as soon as new meters arrive. As a temporary measure, ESCOM has been converting single-phase prepaid meters to post-paid to ensure continued electricity access.

The delays have sparked an outcry from customers, some of whom have endured power outages for up to three months. Complaints have flooded ESCOM’s social media platforms, with one frustrated customer posting: “We are experiencing blackouts, yet you promised to upgrade our meters by the end of January 2025. Do something, please!”

Launched in June 2024, the Token Identifier Project was designed to update prepaid meter software to meet new international standards. However, logistical setbacks have slowed progress, leaving affected customers desperate for a resolution.
