Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes bailed out their underperforming teammates as Manchester United edged Ipswich Town 3-2 on Wednesday, easing fears of relegation but failing to silence doubts over the squad’s fragility.

Despite securing a much-needed victory, United’s defensive frailties were on full display, with costly mistakes from goalkeeper Andre Onana and defender Patrick Dorgu, who was sent off in the first half.

The match started disastrously for Man United side, as Ipswich took the lead just four minutes in after Dorgu’s misjudged pass set up Jaden Philogene for a simple finish. It marked the 21st time this season that United had conceded first in 41 games.

However, Fernandes’ set-piece prowess turned the tide. His free-kick forced Ipswich captain Sam Morsy into an own goal, and minutes later, Matthijs de Ligt put United ahead after a chaotic sequence from a Fernandes corner.

United’s self-destructive tendencies resurfaced before halftime when Dorgu saw red for a reckless challenge on Omari Hutchinson following a VAR review. Moments later, Onana misjudged Philogene’s cross, allowing it to curl straight into the bottom corner for Ipswich’s equalizer.

In the second half, Maguire rose to the occasion, heading in another Fernandes corner to restore United’s lead. With their backs against the wall, the Red Devils held on for their first home league win in over a month, but concerns over their inconsistency remain.
