Mzuzu Road Accident Claims Life of a Passenger

A tragic road accident along the Mzuzu-Nkhatabay M5 road has claimed the life of 51-year-old Henderson Chitsonga. The accident occurred at Lwanatonga area in the early hours of February 19, 2025, at approximately 00:05 hours.

According to reports, the accident involved a Mercedes Benz truck with registration number BZ 5050M/NB 10428, which was traveling from Mzuzu to Nkhatabay. The truck was being driven by Haward Rabson, who had two passengers on board, namely Thandi Kasiyafumbi and the now-deceased Henderson Chitsonga.

It has been established that upon reaching Lwanatonga, Rabson lost control of the vehicle after failing to negotiate a sharp curve due to excessive speed. As a result, the truck overturned and came to rest on the nearside of the road.

The impact of the accident proved fatal for Chitsonga, who sustained severe head injuries. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at Mzuzu Central Hospital. The other passenger, Thandi Kasiyafumbi, suffered a fractured left leg, while the driver, Haward Rabson, sustained head and spine injuries. The vehicle itself was extensively damaged in the crash.

In response to the incident, the Mzuzu Police have urged drivers to adhere to speed limits and strictly follow traffic regulations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident, emphasizing the importance of road safety for all motorists and passengers traveling on the country’s highways.
