In a bid to contribute to environmental conservation, Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President Fleetwood Haiya led a tree-planting exercise along the Blantyre bypass road, spanning from Chinyonga township to Masauko Chipembere Highway.

The event, which took place on tuesday, saw the participation of the National Women’s Football team, the Scorchers, in a collaborative effort to foster a greener future.

“Today, alongside our National Women’s Football team—the Scorchers—we took a step toward a greener future by participating in a tree-planting exercise along the Blantyre bypass road between Chinyonga township and Masauko Chipembere Highway,” wrote Haiya.

His remarks reflect FAM’s commitment to environmental stewardship, emphasizing the role of the football community in safeguarding the planet.

The initiative was graced by the presence of the Mayor of Blantyre, His Worship Cllr. Joseph Makwinja, whose support underscored the importance of community-driven environmental actions.

“A big thanks to Mayor of the city of Blantyre, His Worship Cllr. Joseph Makwinja, for joining us in this meaningful initiative,” Haiya expressed.

Highlighting the broader impact of such initiatives, Haiya acknowledged FIFA’s role in encouraging environmental responsibility within the football fraternity.

“FIFA encourages us to care for our environment, and as football community, this is a responsibility we must collectively embrace. Let us protect our game and our planet,” he stated, reinforcing the link between sports and sustainable practices.

The tree-planting campaign not only symbolizes FAM’s dedication to environmental protection but also aligns with the global call for climate action. As custodians of the game, the football community’s proactive stance is a powerful reminder of the role sports can play in transforming societies.
