There Is Hope Expands Vocational Training at Dzaleka Refugee Camp

Local NGO There Is Hope (TIH) is expanding its vocational training school activities at Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Dowa District under the Skill Up! project, in partnership with Welthungerhilfe (WHH).
The first phase (Feb 2023 – July 2024) trained 285 youth (15–35 years) in bricklaying, plumbing, carpentry, welding, tailoring, and solar installation.
Additionally, 288 participants (165 Malawians, 123 refugees) benefited from entrepreneurship, digital literacy, mentorship, and start-up kits.
TIH Communications Coordinator Madalitso Mvula announced that Phase 2 (Oct 2024 – Sept 2027) aims to enhance economic self-reliance for refugees and host communities.
It will cover entrepreneurship, business incubation, digital skills, mentorship, scholarships for 66 vulnerable girls, and environmental initiatives.
Challenges from Phase 1 included limited computers, communication gaps, and lack of standardized skill assessments. With €699,930 (MWK 1.27 billion) in funding, Phase 2 will focus on post-training support, business capacity building, and monitoring.
