Malawi Increases Electricity Tariffs by 16% Starting February 2025

The Malawi government has announced a 16% increase in electricity tariffs, effective February 1, 2025.
This adjustment marks the second phase of a four-year base tariff approved by the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA).
According to the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM), the tariff revision aims to enhance service delivery, reflecting the corporation’s commitment to improving the electricity supply for its customers. The additional revenue generated from this hike is expected to fund infrastructure upgrades, maintain existing facilities, and ensure a more stable power supply across the country.
The increase comes amid global energy market fluctuations, which have led to similar adjustments in electricity prices worldwide. For instance, the UK’s energy price cap is set to rise by 1.2% from January to March 2025, while Sri Lanka saw a 21.9% reduction in electricity tariffs in March 2024.
As Malawians brace for higher electricity costs, concerns remain about how this adjustment will affect consumers. Some commentators emphasize the need for ESCOM to use the increased revenue efficiently to improve service quality and reliability.
