Violent Protests Erupt in Mbayani After Market Chairperson Allegedly Kills Businessman

Chaos erupted in Mbayani Township this morning as enraged residents vandalized property belonging to Mbayani Market Chairperson Andrew Mandiwe, who is accused of murdering a local businessman over an unpaid debt.
According to eyewitness John Moyeni, the dispute began when the deceased, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, failed to repay K4,000 borrowed from Mandiwe. Allegedly, Mandiwe assaulted him so severely that he succumbed to his injuries.
News of the businessman’s death sparked outrage, prompting residents to take matters into their own hands. In a wave of retribution, they demolished Mandiwe’s houses, accusing him of the brutal killing.
Mandiwe reportedly fled the scene immediately after the incident and remains at large. Authorities have yet to release an official statement, and efforts to reach the Malawi Police Service (MPS) for comment were unsuccessful. However, security forces are expected to intervene to restore order.
The violent protests have reignited concerns over mob justice, with community leaders urging residents to remain calm and allow law enforcement to handle the case. Human rights activists have also condemned the destruction of property, calling for a thorough investigation into both the alleged murder and the retaliatory attacks.
As authorities hunt for Mandiwe, residents of Mbayani demand justice—not only for the slain businessman but also for those affected by the ensuing violence.
