In a continuing wave of defections, more soldiers from the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC) have surrendered to the M23 rebels at Goma Airport, marking a significant turn in the ongoing conflict.

Abandoned by their Commander-in-Chief and President Félix Tshisekedi, over 500 FARDC troops have chosen to join the M23’s cause after years of intense fighting. The decision comes as many soldiers grew disillusioned with the government’s leadership.

The surrendered soldiers have been warmly received by the M23 command, who plan to integrate them into their ranks to strengthen their forces as they prepare for a final push to overthrow Tshisekedi’s government.

The M23 leadership praised the defecting FARDC soldiers for their determination to fight for their country despite being poorly equipped and underpaid by the Tshisekedi administration. The rebels highlighted the soldiers’ resilience and commitment to their cause, even in the face of adversity.
