Malawi has taken a significant step in safeguarding its citizens’ online privacy with the launch of the Data Protection Authority on January 28, 2025.

Speaking at the event, MACRA Director General Daudi Sulemani said the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) aims to mark the occasion by sharing essential tips for protecting personal data on social media.

“As we commemorate Data Protection Day, we emphasize the importance of responsible data handling practices. By following these simple yet effective tips, Malawians can significantly reduce the risk of data breaches and cyber threats,” Sulemani stated.

He further shared expert data protection tips from MACRA, advising citizens to:

Use strong and unique passwords for online accounts.

Be cautious when sharing personal information online.

Regularly review privacy settings on online accounts.

Avoid clicking on suspicious links or downloading attachments from unknown sources.

Encrypt or secure sensitive data when transmitting it over the internet.

Update software and systems regularly to ensure the latest security patches.

Sulemani emphasized that these guidelines are part of Malawi’s efforts to align with international data protection standards, as outlined in the Data Protection Act of 2024.

The Act designates MACRA as the Data Protection Authority, responsible for overseeing the implementation and enforcement of data protection laws in Malawi.
