The government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving sports infrastructure in the Northern Region by directing Mzuzu City Council to develop plans and a budget for a new stadium in the city.

Minister of Youth and Sports, Uchizi Mkandawire, announced this initiative during a visit to Mzuzu Stadium on Tuesday. He described the current facility, built in the 1970s, as no longer fit for purpose due to its advanced state of disrepair.

“The state of Mzuzu Stadium is concerning. The facility is outdated and poses significant safety risks. It is time we focus on long-term solutions by building a modern stadium that meets today’s standards,” Mkandawire stated.

His visit came after heavy rains caused part of the stadium’s perimeter wall to collapse, emphasizing the urgent need for intervention. Mkandawire assured stakeholders that while plans for the new facility are being developed, his ministry would provide technical assistance to rehabilitate the pitch to ensure the stadium remains functional for the upcoming 2025 season.

Mzuzu City Council Chief Executive Officer, Gomezgani Nyasulu, expressed optimism about the project, describing it as a historic milestone for the region. “The new stadium will not only enhance sports development but also provide a safe and modern environment for players and fans,” Nyasulu said.

He further confirmed that reconstruction of the damaged perimeter wall would begin immediately, adding that the council remains committed to ensuring the stadium is safe for use while awaiting the long-term solution.

For decades, Mzuzu Stadium has been a critical venue for Northern Region teams, including Moyale Barracks FC and Mzuzu City Hammers. The announcement of a new state-of-the-art facility has been welcomed by sports fans and teams alike, who view it as a transformative step for football and other sports in the region.

With the government now taking proactive steps, the Northern Region looks set to benefit from improved infrastructure that could inspire a new era of sports development.
