The Concerned Citizens of Malawi, operating under the banner of The People Power Movement, has called on Malawians to rise and reject what it describes as a gross abuse of power by the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA). This follows MACRA’s controversial plan to procure an expensive technology machine aimed at monitoring social media news.

In their statement, the group has urged Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), opposition political parties, and all concerned citizens to unite in demanding accountability from MACRA and ensuring this “misguided plan” is stopped.

The Concerned Citizens assured the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) government that they would not relent until justice prevails and the nation returns to a path of democracy, accountability, and economic stability. They warned that Malawians are watching and will not tolerate actions that betray their trust or jeopardize their future.

In a statement signed by Comrade Edwards Kambanje on January 26, 2025, the group demanded an immediate halt to the procurement process and called for the funds to be redirected to address the country’s pressing economic and social challenges.

The group further demanded that MACRA disclose all details of the procurement plan, including its purpose, cost, and decision-making process. They also called on the government to cease any actions that infringe on constitutional rights, such as the right to privacy and freedom of expression.

The statement criticized the government for focusing on politically motivated projects instead of providing essential services. It described MACRA’s move as irresponsible and a blatant disregard for the pressing needs of Malawians, stating that the procurement reeks of political manipulation and authoritarian tendencies.

“This scheme, shrouded in secrecy and devoid of public consultation, raises serious concerns about the motives behind such a decision. We have every reason to believe that this procurement is not about advancing communications but rather about tightening the noose of political surveillance,” reads part of the statement.

The group expressed fears that the proposed technology would be used to monitor and suppress dissent, silence critics, and invade the privacy of innocent Malawians. They argued that MACRA’s actions reflect the government’s intention to weaponize state institutions against its own people.

The Concerned Citizens vowed to resist any attempt to turn MACRA into a tool of oppression and intimidation. They assured the government that they would not remain silent while the nation is dragged into darkness.

In conclusion, the group reminded the MCP government that this is not the time for wasteful spending or authoritarian tactics. Instead, it is a time for leadership that prioritizes the welfare of Malawians and respects their fundamental rights.
