Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Simplex Chithyola Banda, has launched the 2024 Malawi Demographic and Health Survey (MDHS) Key Indicators Report. The survey, conducted by the National Statistical Office (NSO), highlights significant improvements in Malawi’s health services.

Speaking during the launch, Chithyola Banda emphasized that the report reflects progress toward achieving the Malawi Vision 2063 goal of ensuring universal access to healthcare.

“This report highlights that as a country, we are doing well in terms of health services. Many people, especially pregnant women, are now able to access care in hospitals. This aligns with Vision 2063, which prioritizes healthcare access for every Malawian,” he said.

He commended the NSO for conducting the survey and acknowledged the Ministry of Finance’s critical role in planning and policy formulation. “For a country to progress, it requires a healthy population,” Chithyola Banda added.

NSO Commissioner Shelton Kanyanda noted that the survey utilized historical data to present a comprehensive overview of healthcare progress in Malawi.

“This report has outlined key issues that previously affected healthcare delivery and highlighted the improvements made. Today, more women receive care from professional health workers in hospitals, leading to significant drops in maternal and child mortality rates,” Kanyanda said.

He further stated that the report is preliminary, with the final results expected to be released in August this year.

The National Statistical Office first introduced the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) in 2000, providing critical insights into the country’s healthcare systems and progress.
