Jenda Police Station Records 31.1% Crime Reduction

Jenda Police Station has achieved a 31.1% reduction in crime for the just-ended year, 2024. The station recorded 457 cases compared to 663 cases in 2023, marking a significant decrease of 206 cases.
According to its published annual report, the station arrested 282 suspects, successfully prosecuting 181, resulting in varying convictions. Meanwhile, 11 cases ended in acquittals, 46 were resolved at the station level, and 44 remain pending trial due to limited court availability at the Mzimba Magistrate Court. The court, which serves three stations—Mzimba, Jenda, and Kafukule—faces significant constraints in handling the caseload.
In addition to reducing crime, Jenda Police Station reported a 59% decrease in road accidents, recording 25 cases with 11 fatalities compared to 62 accidents with 18 fatalities in 2023. Fatalities dropped by 39%, while serious road accidents decreased by 25%, and minor accidents were reduced by 79%, with only 9 cases recorded compared to 39 in 2023.
The station attributes these achievements to improved collaboration with the community, enhanced crime management strategies, and community engagement initiatives. Awareness campaigns, outreach programs, and radio broadcasts conducted by the public relations and community policing branches have played a pivotal role in educating the public and fostering a culture of lawfulness.
Despite these successes, Jenda Police Station faces significant operational challenges. The station does not have its own court and relies on the Mzimba Magistrate Court, located 65 kilometers away. Court sessions are limited to three days a week due to transportation constraints, with only one functioning vehicle available. These limitations hinder the station’s ability to serve the community effectively.
