The completion date for the M’mbelwa Stadium, a multibillion-kwacha project designed to accommodate 15,000 spectators, remains unclear due to unresolved negotiations between the government and the contractor, Manobec Construction Company, on a revised timeline through an addendum.

Launched in 2018, the project has seen its budget revised multiple times, escalating from 2.5 billion to 10 billion kwacha. Initially projected to be completed by December 2024, construction is currently 85% complete, suggesting the stadium will not be operational this year.

A site inspection revealed ongoing work on the installation of pipes and drainage systems, while landscaping for the pitch has yet to begin.

Victor Msowoya, Project Manager for Manobec Construction Company, attributed delays to frequent design changes inspired by the performance of other stadiums, as well as setbacks in the approval and payment of addendums.

Addressing funding concerns, Allan Chitete, Director of Lands and Public Works for M’mbelwa District Council, confirmed that government payments to the contractor have been timely, with the latest disbursement made in December 2024.

Once completed, the stadium will include seating for 15,000 spectators, 50 VIP seats, a standard football pitch, and an elevator.
