Two Passengers Die in Separate Road Accidents in Mzuzu

Two passengers, Amon Mkandawire, 45, and an unidentified female passenger, have died in separate road accidents in Mzuzu along the Chikangawa-Mzuzu M1 Road and the Area 4-Kaviwale Road within the city.
In the first incident, it has been established that on January 22, 2024, at around 8:00 AM, Eliam Manda was driving a Toyota Isis Hatchback, registration number NN1184, from Chikangawa towards Mzuzu with seven passengers on board. Upon reaching Lusangazi, the driver lost control of the vehicle due to speeding, causing it to veer off the road and overturn.
Mkandawire, a passenger, sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at Mapale Health Centre. The driver and six other passengers escaped with minor injuries, though the vehicle sustained extensive damage.
In the second incident, an unknown female passenger died in a collision that occurred at 5:30 PM on the Mzuzu-Kaviwale Road in Area 4. Emmanuel Nkhoma was driving a Suzuki Alto Hatchback, registration number TO 8751, with five passengers on board when he collided head-on with a Mazda Axela Hatchback, registration number BX 330, driven by Wongani Tchongwe.
The impact caused severe injuries to one female passenger from the Suzuki Alto. She was rushed to Mzuzu Central Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. Both drivers and the remaining passengers sustained minor injuries.
Police in Mzuzu have urged drivers to exercise caution, adhere to traffic regulations, and avoid speeding. They also encouraged the public to report reckless driving and reminded passengers to always fasten their seatbelts to enhance safety during road travel.
