Residents of Mzuzu City were taken by surprise on Monday afternoon when the Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) conducted an unannounced inspection at SANA North End Mall, uncovering severe hygiene violations that led to the immediate closure of the shop.

During the inspection, MBS officials discovered multiple issues with the quality of food items, including beef, fish, and bread. These violations raised concerns about public health and safety, prompting the regulatory body to take swift action.

The closure left many customers stranded, including one who had planned to purchase supplies for his business. The frustrated customer acknowledged the inconvenience but applauded the MBS for stepping in. He remarked that while SANA Shop has long been accused of offering substandard products, many residents continue to shop there due to the limited presence of large retail outlets in Mzuzu City.

This incident has reignited discussions about food safety standards and the need for stricter enforcement in the region.

In a related development, the Minister of Labour, Engineer Vitumbiko Mumba, earlier on Monday visited Vizara Plantation as part of a series of unannounced company inspections.

During his visit, the minister uncovered cases of worker mistreatment, poor hygiene, and inadequate wages. The inspections, aimed at evaluating service delivery and addressing worker grievances, underscore the government’s commitment to improving labor conditions and ensuring compliance with industry standards.

Both incidents highlight the growing pressure on businesses to maintain ethical practices and adhere to regulatory requirements to safeguard public health and worker welfare.
