Kaweche Pledges to Revamp Mzuzu Stadium

Aspiring Member of Parliament William Kaweche has pledged to give Mzuzu City South East Constituency a new and modernized Mzuzu Stadium.
Kaweche made the promise after visiting the 1979-built stadium, part of whose wall collapsed following heavy rains on Friday.
He emphasized that, if elected, he will advocate for government intervention to construct a better and safer structure at the same location.
“Those currently in power are neglecting the community. This structure, built decades ago, is now a safety hazard during games. I want to assure the people of this constituency that, once in Parliament, I will push the government to build a modern stadium. This facility should host major events, including international games, for the benefit of our youth and community,” Kaweche stated.
He highlighted the historical significance of Mzuzu Stadium, which has been a launchpad for many Malawian football stars.
“Mzuzu Stadium has produced some of the best players in the country. For instance, Gabadinho Mhango, Fisher Kondowe, Gastin Simkonda, Robert Ng’ambi, and many others began their journeys here. We cannot continue relying on such an outdated and unsafe structure,” he added.
On its part, the Mzuzu City Council, which owns the stadium, acknowledged the incident. Through Public Relations Officer McDonald Gondwe, the council assured the public that repair work would begin shortly.
“We were already aware of the structural issues before the collapse and had plans in place. Repairs will commence soon and are expected to be completed within two weeks,” Gondwe said.
Mzuzu Stadium serves as the home ground for Mzuzu City Hammers and Moyale Barracks football teams, both of which play in Malawi’s elite football league.
