Police in Jenda, Mzimba, have arrested two men, Mavuto Shaba (42) and Nemon Shaba (46), for grievously harming Jevas Shaba, Timothy Shaba, and Suzgo Banda in Khosolo, Mzimba District, over a long-standing land dispute.

The arrests, made on January 15, 2025, followed a complaint lodged by relatives of the victims, who are currently receiving treatment at Mzimba District Hospital. One of the victims, Suzgo Banda, has since been referred to Mzuzu Central Hospital for further care.

Investigations reveal that the land disputes between the Mapira Shaba and Mbiko Shaba families date back to 2017. Traditional Authority Khosolo had ruled in favor of the Mbiko Shabas as the rightful owners of the contested land. However, the Mapira Shaba family (victims) were reportedly dissatisfied with the decision, leading to ongoing tensions.

On the day of the incident, children of the landowners were reportedly working on the disputed farm when the victims—referred to as “invaders”—arrived, armed with pangas and bows, intending to disrupt them. A confrontation ensued, during which the alleged perpetrators overpowered the victims, causing grievous injuries.

The matter was reported to Luwerezi Police Unit, prompting officers to visit the scene and arrest the two suspects. Both have been charged with grievous harm and will appear in court once all necessary procedures are completed.

Police in Jenda have condemned the violent incident and reiterated their commitment to combating acts of lawlessness and mob justice, which not only violate human rights but also hinder investigations.

Both the victims and suspects are from Traditional Authority Khosolo in Mzimba District and are blood relatives.
