Some local film enthusiasts in Malawi believe the election of a new Film Association of Malawi (FAMA) president was a missed opportunity to select a leader with a proven track record in the film industry.

This reaction follows the election of socialite Dorothy Kingston as FAMA’s new president. Kingston received 66 votes, defeating actress Flora Suya, who managed just 15 votes.

Kayira Henry, a film enthusiast, expressed concerns about the decision, highlighting the developmental challenges facing Malawi’s film industry. Henry warned against taking a “trial-and-error” approach by entrusting leadership to individuals with limited industry experience.

Similarly, Cathy Levi raised doubts about Kingston’s qualifications, citing her lack of experience in acting, directing, or producing films.

Despite the criticisms, Kingston has outlined ambitious plans for her tenure. She has promised to establish modern offices for FAMA to streamline operations and set up a proposal writing committee to secure funding for the association.
