The Third Battalion of the Malawi Defense Force (MDF) athletics team, Moyale Barracks, has declared their readiness to defend the Inter-Units Cross Country trophy.

The announcement comes as the team intensifies preparations for the Mzuzu MDF Inter-Units Cross Country competition, set to take place on January 10, 2025, at Mzuzu Golf Course.

Moyale Barracks head coach, Always Zingile, expressed confidence in his team’s ability to claim the trophy for a third consecutive time.

“We are almost ready for the tournament,” Zingile said. “As you know, we won in 2023 at Mzuzu Golf Course and in 2024 at Gymkhana Club in Zomba. This will be our third time, and we are determined to retain the title. We have been training 20 athletes 10 men and 10 women but per the competition rules, we must select the best six in each category to compete.”

Zingile attributed the team’s consistent success to their commitment to continuous training.

“Our secret is simple: nonstop training. We train throughout the year, which keeps us in peak form. That’s why we are always on top of our game. Beyond this tournament, we’ve also performed well in other competitions, such as the 2024 Mzuzu Half Marathon, where Fostina Mbemba claimed first place in the women’s category,” he added.

The competition will feature teams from various military units, including Kamuzu Barracks, Chilumba Barracks, Cobbe Barracks, the Engineering Battalion, Airborne Battalion, and the Marine Unit, among others.

This year’s event is expected to draw significant attention, as Moyale Barracks seeks to cement their legacy in MDF athletics with a third consecutive victory. The team remains focused and optimistic as the countdown to the competition begins.
