Chihana Declares Opposition Alliance Will Oust MCP in 2025 Elections
The President of the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD), Enoch Kamzingeni Chihana, has declared that the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), which came into power through a coalition of alliances, will be voted out in September 2025 by the same opposition alliance.
Chihana revealed that discussions among opposition parties are ongoing to form a united front. He assured Malawians that by 8 p.m. on September 16, 2025, the MCP would concede defeat, likening the anticipated loss to a “morning burial,” breaking the norm of afternoon ceremonies.
He further asserted that the opposition alliance is preparing to deliver a decisive blow to the MCP, comparing the impact to the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings ordered by U.S. President Harry Truman. He urged the MCP to begin crafting exit strategies immediately.
Speaking during an exclusive interview on Timveni Radio, Chihana disclosed that he recently visited former President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika at Page House in Mangochi to extend Christmas greetings. Chihana described the meeting as an opportunity to seek Mutharika’s counsel on governance, given his experience as a former Head of State.
“Malawians should brace for a new alliance that prioritizes the nation’s interests over individual ambitions. Come September 16, 2025, the political landscape will change dramatically,” Chihana stated.
Public Reactions
Elizabeth Kaliza Banda, a resident of Area 51 in Lilongwe, expressed confidence in Chihana’s statements, particularly after assurances from opposition parties regarding electoral reforms. She highlighted key issues, including the opposition’s commitment to barring the use of Smartmatic machines, the resignation of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson and National Registration Bureau (NRB) Chief, and the initiation of a new voter registration process with revamped MEC leadership.
Banda warned that if the 2025 elections proceed without these reforms, the MCP could secure victory through alleged rigging strategies that began in 2022. She urged opposition parties to expedite meetings to nullify the current voter registration process and initiate a fresh one.
“Relying on data collected by MEC and NRB is a recipe for failure. If opposition parties don’t act now, they shouldn’t dream of winning in September 2025,” Banda cautioned.
She further alleged that voter registration continues unofficially despite the closure of the official exercise, fueling suspicions of MCP’s plans to manipulate the electoral outcome. Banda called on opposition parties and Malawians to remain vigilant.
