Vice President Dr. Michael Usi today led the monitoring of the Lean Season Food Insecurity Response Programme at Nasawa Ground in Zomba District.

The initiative is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to alleviate food insecurity among vulnerable households during the challenging lean season.

Addressing attendees, Dr. Usi reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that no Malawian goes hungry during this critical period. He stressed the importance of timely food aid distribution and called on local leaders to identify and support the most affected households.

“The lean season presents significant challenges for many families across the country. This response programme is a lifeline for those struggling to put food on the table. We are here to ensure that every household in need receives the necessary support,” Dr. Usi said.

The programme, implemented in partnership with the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), international organizations, and local communities, is providing essential food assistance to thousands of households in Zomba and other districts.

Engaging Beneficiaries and Leaders
During the event, Dr. Usi inspected the food distribution process and engaged with beneficiaries and local leaders to assess the programme’s impact. Many beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the government’s intervention, noting that the support had eased their struggles during the lean season.

“Life has been tough for us, but this support gives us hope. We are grateful for the government’s effort to care for the vulnerable,” shared one beneficiary, a mother of four from the area.

Ensuring Transparency and Accountability
Dr. Usi emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in managing food aid. “Every bag of maize, every resource allocated to this programme must reach its intended recipient. We cannot tolerate any malpractice,” he warned.

Promoting Long-Term Solutions
The Vice President also urged communities to adopt resilience-building measures, such as irrigation farming and crop diversification, to reduce reliance on seasonal aid. He reiterated the government’s commitment to implementing long-term strategies for achieving sustainable food security.

As the lean season continues, the Lean Season Food Insecurity Response Programme remains a vital safety net for vulnerable Malawians. Under Dr. Usi’s leadership, the government aims to address immediate food needs while working toward a future where all citizens can achieve self-sufficiency and resilience.
