Michael Usi INSISTS HE IS STILL THE LEADER OF UTM ONE MONTH AFTER CONVENTION

In a surprising turn of events, Dr. Michael Usi has publicly declared that he remains the leader of the United Transformation Movement (UTM), despite the party holding its convention a month ago. His statement has sparked widespread debate within the political landscape, with many questioning the validity of his claim and the current state of affairs within UTM.

The UTM convention, held last month, was expected to solidify leadership structures ahead of next year’s general elections. However, reports from insiders suggest the event was marred by internal wrangling and unclear outcomes, particularly regarding the leadership position.

Dr. Usi, widely known for his charisma and grassroots appeal, maintains that his leadership of UTM remains legitimate. Speaking at a public event over the weekend, Usi stated:

“Leadership is not just about conventions or titles; it is about vision and service to the people. I am still the leader of UTM, and I will continue to serve the party and Malawians at large.”

While Usi refrained from directly addressing whether the convention’s outcomes had officially altered his role, his tone suggested a rift between him and certain factions within the party.

The situation has fueled speculation that UTM is grappling with internal divisions, with some members advocating for a new direction and leadership, while others remain loyal to Usi. Analysts believe his statement could be a strategic move to assert his influence and rally his supporters within the party.

Political analyst Ernest Thindwa suggests that Usi’s remarks could signal deeper challenges within UTM. “If the leadership question remains unresolved, it risks undermining the party’s preparations for the 2025 elections. This is a critical moment for UTM,” Thindwa noted.

Notably, UTM’s other senior leaders, including key figures like Patricia Kaliati and Dr. Dalitso Kabambe, have remained silent on the matter. The lack of an official statement from the party has only added to the confusion, leaving supporters and the public guessing about the party’s internal dynamics.

As the 2025 elections approach, political parties in Malawi are working to solidify their positions and strategies. UTM, a member of the Tonse Alliance government, faces the challenge of presenting itself as a viable alternative to the dominant Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

Dr. Usi’s insistence on his leadership could either strengthen his base or deepen divisions within the party. His ability to unite UTM and clarify the party’s direction will likely determine its performance in the elections.

The coming weeks will be critical for UTM as it seeks to resolve its leadership issues and refocus on its electoral agenda. Whether Dr. Michael Usi’s claim of leadership will hold remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: UTM must act decisively to avoid further confusion and ensure its relevance in Malawi’s political landscape.

For now, Usi’s statement has reignited interest in UTM’s internal politics, leaving many to wonder if the party can weather this storm and emerge stronger ahead of the crucial 2025 polls.
