The Chisakho Watch, an election observer group, has condemned politicians for bribing Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) officials and distributing handouts to registrants during Phase 3 of the voter registration process.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lilongwe on Tuesday, Bishop Gilfford Matonga, Board Chair of Chisakho Watch, revealed that a Member of Parliament at Nyamithuthu Registration Center in Nsanje was caught distributing K10,000 to MEC officials.

Matonga further disclosed that another lawmaker at Mawelo School Center in Lilongwe’s Likuni constituency was distributing cash handouts of K5,000, giving out soya pieces, and promising registrants loans through the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF).

He emphasized that such illicit activities pose a significant threat to the credibility and integrity of the electoral process. Matonga called on the MEC to take immediate disciplinary action against staff accepting handouts from political operatives.
