One of the Malawian activists,  Edwards Kambanje, has criticized the findings of the Commission of Inquiry for indirectly accusing the late Dr. Saulosi Chilima and his team of procedural failures regarding the aircraft used during the tragic flight on Monday, 10th June 2024.

Kambanje described the report as both concerning and unjust, arguing that it unfairly places blame on individuals who can no longer defend themselves while seemingly absolving key figures, including President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, who may bear significant responsibility.

He pointed out that the Commission’s heavy reliance on testimonies from government officials, including President Chakwera and other high-ranking figures, without sufficient critical analysis, undermines the credibility of its findings.

In his response, Kambanje expressed concern over the absence of diverse perspectives, particularly testimonies from ordinary citizens and individuals unaffiliated with the government. He argued that this omission raises questions about the report’s impartiality, suggesting it appears more focused on shielding powerful figures than uncovering the truth.

Kambanje further criticized the report for its silence on the roles and failures of various government bodies, particularly the Civil Aviation Authority and the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC). He stressed that many individuals and institutions may have contributed to the circumstances leading to the tragedy.

“The Commission’s report narrates the events surrounding the incident but falls short in depth, transparency, and accountability. It focuses on easy scapegoats while avoiding critical questions,” Kambanje said.

He went on to describe the report as a “tool for political convenience” rather than a genuine investigative effort. “This devastating event has left a profound impact on our nation, and it is our duty to ensure that the investigation is conducted with utmost integrity and impartiality,” he stated.

Kambanje called on the Commission to revisit its findings and engage a broader range of testimonies to ensure justice is served for the victims and their families. He emphasized that the people of Malawi deserve nothing less than a transparent and accountable investigation—one that honors the memory of those lost and upholds the principles of justice.
