MRP Disassociates Itself from MRP Pressure Group

The 14th Revolutionary Party, Muvi wa Chilungamo (MRP), has publicly disassociated itself from a pressure group allegedly distributing United Democratic Front (UDF) T-shirts under its name.

Originally a pressure group, MRP transitioned into a fully registered political party in December 2024 under the Registrar General’s office. The party announced its plans to contest in the Presidential, Parliamentary, and Local Government elections slated for September 2025.

The journey to becoming a political party began in 2016 with the Malawi Engagement Group (MAENGA), an initiative founded by WhatsApp members under the late Dr. Hazwell Bandawe. This group focused on engaging the government on national matters before transforming into a registered political entity.

In a press statement dated December 11, 2024, Secretary General Greyson Mikuwa clarified the party’s stance. He reminded Malawians that while MRP has its roots as a pressure group, it is now a political party with offices at Phekani House, Blantyre.

The party expressed concerns over the UDF and its alleged use of an unregistered pressure group operating under the name Muvi wa Chilungamo. MRP called on UDF leader Dr. Atupele Muluzi to address this matter, labeling the actions as an infringement on Malawi’s political integrity.

“Malawi’s laws do not permit duplications or misconduct of this nature,” the statement read. It further advised citizens not to be misled by the pressure group and emphasized that the official Muvi wa Chilungamo Revolutionary Party (MRP) is distinct and legitimate.

Finally, the MRP warned that no individual or group is authorized to use its name as a pressure group, urging UDF to take immediate steps to halt the misuse.
