MAGLA Sounds Alarm on Gambling Addiction, Urges Media to Promote Responsible Gambling
The Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA) has expressed deep concern over the increasing prevalence of gambling addiction in Malawi.
MAGLA Director General Rachel Mijiga revealed that gambling addiction has led to severe consequences for many individuals, including depression and hospitalization due to excessive gambling.
“There is a widespread misunderstanding of gambling, with many people perceiving it as a form of employment rather than entertainment,” Mijiga stated.
She emphasized the urgent need to raise public awareness about the true nature of gambling, highlighting its purpose as a recreational activity rather than a reliable income source.
To tackle this growing issue, MAGLA is calling on the media to play an active role in promoting responsible gambling and compliance with gaming and lotteries regulations.
“The media has a vital role to play in creating awareness about the dangers of excessive gambling and the importance of responsible gambling practices,” Mijiga added.
