Mangochi hosted the commemoration of International Human Rights Day today, with Vice President Dr. Michael Usi presiding over the significant event. The celebration, held under the theme “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now,” also marked the 25th anniversary of the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) in its mission to promote and protect human rights in Malawi.

The Vice President joined hundreds of participants in a spirited march from the Mangochi Boma roundabout to Mangochi Stadium, where the main event took place. The march symbolized solidarity and a shared commitment to advancing human rights across the country.

In his keynote address, Dr. Usi highlighted the collective responsibility of all Malawians in recognizing, protecting, and upholding human rights. He stressed the importance of ensuring that these rights are not treated as abstract ideals but as actionable priorities.

“This year’s theme reminds us that human rights are not a distant goal but an immediate need. Together, we must ensure that these rights define our present and guide our future,” he said.

The MHRC, established in 1998, has been at the forefront of championing justice, equality, and dignity for all citizens. The Commission’s Chairperson reflected on its achievements over the past 25 years, including addressing human rights violations, fostering accountability, and raising public awareness on human rights issues.

The event brought together government officials, civil society organizations, traditional leaders, and citizens from diverse backgrounds, united in their commitment to human rights. It featured performances, exhibitions, and discussions aimed at celebrating progress while addressing ongoing challenges.

As part of the commemoration, stakeholders are expected to deliberate on actionable strategies to ensure human rights remain integral to Malawi’s development agenda, aligning with the nation’s long-term aspirations under the Malawi 2063 vision.

Today’s event serves as a powerful reminder that protecting human rights is not only a legal obligation but also a moral imperative, essential for building a brighter, more equitable future for all Malawians.
