In a bold move to address two of Malawi’s most critical challenges—fuel security and food supply—President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has intensified engagements with the Government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

His latest efforts underscore his commitment to forging international partnerships that can drive sustainable solutions for Malawi’s economy and its people.

In a high-profile meeting with His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, President Chakwera detailed the longstanding challenges of Malawi’s erratic fuel supply system, which has relied on the open tender procurement model for decades. He highlighted how this system’s dysfunction has not only disrupted fuel availability but also triggered widespread economic instability.

“Sheikh Mohamed showed a deep understanding of the ripple effects this issue has caused across our economy and expressed solidarity with our plight,” President Chakwera stated. “I am encouraged by his keen interest in ensuring the UAE remains an integral part of the solution to Malawi’s fuel insecurity.”

The discussions revolved around transitioning to a more stable and efficient Government-to-Government (G2G) fuel supply arrangement, which would eliminate the inefficiencies and vulnerabilities of the current system. This potential partnership signals a major step forward in securing a reliable fuel supply for Malawi, paving the way for enhanced economic growth and stability.

Beyond fuel security, President Chakwera used the meeting to advocate for support on another pressing issue—food security. Following the declaration of a State of National Disaster earlier this year due to a prolonged dry spell that severely impacted agricultural yields, Malawi has faced significant challenges in meeting its food supply needs.

“I lobbied for continued support from the UAE to help mitigate the effects of the dry spell on our harvest,” President Chakwera explained. “Food security remains a top priority, and partnerships like these are vital in addressing the challenges our nation faces.”

The discussions with Sheikh Mohamed underscore President Chakwera’s proactive approach to securing international partnerships that address Malawi’s urgent needs. His focus on sustainable solutions, particularly in the areas of fuel and food security, reflects his administration’s commitment to building resilience and fostering long-term development for the nation.

As these engagements progress, Malawians can look forward to the tangible benefits of strengthened bilateral relations with the UAE, signaling a brighter and more secure future.
