Chintheche Drail Songwe Border United Super League Promotion
Songwe Border United’s hopes for promotion to the elite league suffered a setback following a 2-0 defeat to Chintheche United at Chiwaza Ground on Wednesday in the NRFA Simso Mzuzu 12 Sponsors League.
Jimmy Makwenda Kalanje scored a goal in each half, boosting Chintheche United to second place in the standings and leaving Songwe Border United needing a point to secure promotion.
The loss means Songwe Border United must now rely on Raiply FC dropping points in their Saturday away fixture against Chilumba Barracks at Majaliro Ground. Alternatively, they must avoid defeat in their final fixture against Raiply FC next weekend. For Raiply, promotion hinges on winning both their remaining matches.
Songwe Border United’s coach, Gift Chilongo, expressed disappointment with the result, attributing the loss to poor officiating but remained optimistic about their chances.
“We lost, not to Chintheche, but to the referees. Every attack by my team was ruled offside. However, we are close to achieving promotion, and I am confident we won’t lose at home,” said a visibly frustrated Chilongo.
Chintheche United coach, Carlot Kayuni, praised his team’s tactical discipline and downplayed officiation concerns.
“We knew they relied on a single striker, so we made it hard for him to operate and capitalized on our chances. Regarding the officiation, I didn’t notice any issues. We were surprised by the change of referees, but we focused on our game,” Kayuni said.
The league continues this weekend, with Chilumba Barracks hosting title contenders Raiply FC at Majaliro Ground, while Jenda United will face Ekwaiweni Tafika on Sunday. The final fixtures are scheduled for next weekend.
