IRC Orders FAM to Compensate Former Flames Coach Meke Mwase K440 Million
The Industrial Relations Court (IRC) in Blantyre has directed the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) to compensate former Flames coach Meke Mwase with K440 million for unlawful termination of his contract, redeployment, and constructive dismissal.
IRC Deputy Chairperson Edna Bodole ruled that the amount represents the 36-month duration of Mwase’s contract, aligning his compensation with the wage scale of former Flames expatriate coaches, Romanian Mario Marinica and Belgian Ronny Van Geneugden (RVG), who were his successor and predecessor, respectively.
However, Bodole excluded certain benefits from Mwase’s compensation, such as motor vehicle allowance, insurance cover, annual gold card membership, and life insurance.
Mwase’s lawyer, David Kanyenda, expressed satisfaction with the ruling, despite the awarded sum falling short of their initial demand of K518 million. “We are happy with the outcome,” he said while accompanied by the coach.
FAM’s lawyer, Luciano Mickeus, stated that the association would deliberate on whether to appeal the decision.
