MK Academy narrowly defeated struggling Gafu Sisters 3-2 on Saturday at the Botanic Ground, extending their lead at the top of the FAM Women’s Football League to six points.

Gafu Sisters started strongly, with Pilirani Pidoh Lupembe scoring in the 7th minute after the MK Academy goalkeeper moved off her line. Moments later, Martha Chirwa doubled the lead, capitalizing on a collision between the MK Academy keeper and a defender to tap the ball into an empty net. However, Eddah Gondwe responded quickly for MK Academy, pulling one back in the 19th minute. The first half ended with Gafu leading 2-1.

In the second half, Gafu resorted to time-wasting tactics but eventually paid the price. Mary Nkhoma equalized for MK Academy in the 67th minute following a brilliant cross from Angela Mwalilino, who made an impressive run down the right wing. Gafu’s defense crumbled under pressure, conceding an own goal in the 89th minute when Maggie Banda mistakenly directed the ball into her own net after her goalkeeper misjudged a play. The match ended 3-2 in favor of MK Academy.

MK Academy coach Khumbo Sibale commended his players for their resilience and promised to address their shortcomings.

“It was a tough game. We struggled in the first minutes, conceding twice, but we came back strong in the second half and pushed the game into their half. We’ll work on the areas we need to improve,” said Sibale.

Gafu Sisters coach Zikani Kasambala lamented his team’s missed chances and loss of focus.

“We played well in the first half but failed to maintain momentum. We looked satisfied with the lead and lost concentration. However, we still have three home games, and we must win them to avoid relegation,” said Kasambala.

With this victory, MK Academy extended their lead at the summit to six points, with Moyale Barracks trailing in second place and holding two games in hand.

In other league matches, Mzuzu City Hammers Queens thrashed Mighty Queens 8-1, while Ekwendeni Sisters edged Rumphi Sisters 1-0.
