The Greenbelt Authority (GBA) is actively promoting awareness of the Access to Information (ATI) Act, particularly in communities where its projects are underway.

During an ATI sensitization meeting held on Thursday with community leaders near the Nthola Irola Irrigation Scheme in Karonga, GBA Public Relations Officer Sam Majamanda emphasized the value of open communication. He stated that fostering transparency is vital in the modern information age, as it helps prevent speculation and misunderstandings about developmental activities.

“The ATI Act requires all public institutions to engage with the communities they serve and other stakeholders, ensuring people understand their right to access information,” Majamanda explained.

Sub-Traditional Authority Mwangolela commended the GBA for the initiative, stating, “We have waited a long time to learn about the Access to Information Act, and now our eyes have been opened.”

Bitton Mwalweni, president of the Water Users Association for Nthola Irola, echoed similar sentiments, sharing that the sensitization empowered them to seek information about the ongoing irrigation scheme. He expressed optimism that this initiative would enhance collaboration between the community and the GBA, contributing to the scheme’s success.

Notably, the GBA was recently recognized as one of the leading public institutions in promoting access to information in the country.
