In a decisive move to address delays and quality concerns in the education sector, Malawi’s Ministry of Education has terminated contracts with 51 construction companies failing to meet deadlines and required standards. The announcement was made by the Secretary for Education, Mangani Chilala Katundu, during a press briefing in Lilongwe.

Katundu explained that these contractors had delayed the construction of critical infrastructure, including classroom blocks, hostels, laboratories, and other essential facilities, which has negatively impacted Malawi’s education sector. He emphasized that these delays have undermined efforts to improve learning environments and accommodate the growing student population across the country.

“The Ministry cannot allow projects that are crucial to the future of our education system to suffer from inefficiency and lack of commitment,” Katundu stated. “These delays and substandard work are hindering our efforts to provide equitable and quality education to Malawian students.”

The Ministry is actively pursuing several ambitious initiatives to strengthen the education sector, including the Equity with Quality and Learning at Secondary Project (EQUALS) and the Malawi Education Reform Programme (MERP). These projects aim to expand access to quality secondary education, focusing on building and upgrading essential infrastructure to create safe, modern, and conducive learning environments.

The termination of these contracts sends a strong message about the government’s commitment to ensuring that public resources are well-utilized and that projects are completed on time and to high standards. According to Katundu, the Ministry will seek new contractors who can meet the construction standards and timelines required for these critical projects.

“Quality infrastructure is a foundation for a quality education system, and the Ministry is determined to hold all service providers accountable to ensure these standards are met,” Katundu added. He noted that this move will help expedite the progress of stalled projects, bringing the Ministry closer to achieving its educational objectives.

This step underscores the Ministry’s focus on accountability and its commitment to creating a reliable framework for educational development in Malawi. Through stringent measures and continuous oversight, the government aims to improve the learning experience for Malawi’s youth, ensuring infrastructure issues do not hinder the nation’s educational advancement.
