DC Lilongwe Requests Opposition Parties to Reschedule Planned Demonstrations
Lilongwe District Commissioner, Dr. Lawford Palani, has requested opposition parties to reschedule demonstrations and vigils originally planned for Wednesday, 13th November 2024, at the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) headquarters in Lilongwe. The request stems from concerns that the Malawi Police Service (MPS) may not be able to provide sufficient security due to prior commitments.
This development has sparked reactions from opposition parties and concerned citizens. Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) spokesperson, Shadric Namalomba, responded by emphasizing that the opposition followed all necessary protocols by informing the District Commissioner’s office and the police of the planned demonstrations.
“The DC has no authority to cancel or stop our demonstrations,” Namalomba stated. “We have notified them; we are not asking for permission to hold demonstrations and vigils at MEC’s headquarters.”
Rodgers Kamphangala, a supporter of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) from Mvera in Dowa District, warned Dr. Palani that he could be held accountable for any actions perceived as obstructing the demonstration. Kamphangala accused Dr. Palani of aligning with the MCP, suggesting this may compromise his neutrality as a public official.
Kamphangala further questioned why such restrictions are predominantly imposed in Lilongwe and not in other districts, hinting at a pattern of favoritism. He advised Dr. Palani to remember that his position is temporary and that impartiality should guide his decisions as a public servant.
“Before you were appointed DC for Lilongwe, others held this position,” Kamphangala remarked, advising Dr. Palani to consider his actions carefully.
The opposition parties plan to proceed with their demonstrations at MEC’s City Centre office, calling for the resignation of MEC Chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja, Chief Elections Officer Andrew Mpesi, and National Registration Bureau Chief Mphatso Sambo.
