Pastor Moses Shumba, a member of the Malawi Freedom Fighters Movement (MFF), has spoken out about the sacrifices he believes are essential for activists.

He emphasized that being an activist involves a readiness to face arrest, torture, abuse, or even death. Reflecting on his recent arrest, he stated that he was unsurprised by the experience.

Pastor Shumba, comparing his spirit to that of a lion, said he fears only God and recalled telling police officers in Blantyre to do as they wished, even challenging them to shoot him if necessary.

He described his time at Maula Prison in Lilongwe as painful, claiming that Malawians still lack answers regarding the death of former Vice President Dr. Saulosi Chilima and eight others in Chikangawa Forest on June 10, 2024.

Upon his release, he answered questions from Malawians about his detention for allegedly insulting President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera through audio clips. Pastor Shumba claimed that God protected him through his ordeal, and he was determined to continue speaking the truth, backed by evidence, even if it brought him further trouble.

Pastor Shumba assured the public that his commitment to activism remains strong. He clarified that although he does not believe President Chakwera directly harmed Dr. Chilima, he intends to continue holding leaders accountable.

He said his arrest had deepened his faith and commitment to truth, adding that his criticisms are rooted in his desire for a better Malawi for all.

“The magistrate reminded me of my freedom of speech but noted it must be exercised responsibly, with evidence to support my statements,” Pastor Shumba explained. He expressed gratitude to his supporters, acknowledging that while prison restricts one’s voice, the prayers of others contributed to his release.

He thanked the Defenders Coalition for Good Governance and his MFF colleagues for their support, adding that his activism is self-motivated, with contributions from individuals within the DPP helping cover his legal expenses.

Finally, Pastor Shumba pledged to avoid unsubstantiated accusations against President Chakwera, stating that he would speak only on matters he could verify with evidence.
