Chitseka Foundation Champions Community Engagement for Environmental Conservation
The Chitseka Foundation has launched initiatives at Michiru Forest in Blantyre, underscoring the vital role of community involvement in tackling Malawi’s environmental challenges.
At the launch, Foundation Director Prince Chitseka highlighted that community engagement is crucial in addressing issues like deforestation, soil erosion, and climate change, which affect the daily lives of Malawians.
“Our communities are on the frontlines of environmental change,” Chitseka stated.
“By equipping them with the knowledge and tools needed to protect their surroundings, we can make a lasting impact in conserving our natural resources and building a more resilient environment.”
A key part of the initiative involves training locals to construct water control galleries with stone check dams to prevent soil erosion and manage water flow, equipping them with practical conservation skills.
Blantyre District Council Land Resources Conservation Officer, Charles Mthyoka, praised the project, noting its potential to support food security and counteract land degradation.
“By supporting community-led conservation efforts, we can help ensure food security and protect resources for future generations,” Mthyoka remarked.
Michiru Forest Community Scout chairperson, Maliko Chionga, expressed appreciation for the foundation’s support, calling for further collaboration.
“The community feels empowered by this initiative, and we hope more organizations will join hands to strengthen conservation efforts across the country,” Chionga added.
This initiative by the Chitseka Foundation at Michiru Forest serves as a model for sustainable environmental management, inspiring communities across Malawi to actively conserve essential natural resources.
