Kamphangala Demands Reinstatement of Senior Group Village Headman James
Rodgers Kamphangala, a diehard supporter of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), has called for the reinstatement of Senior Group Village Headman James, who was removed from his position after protesting the diversion of a school block construction project in his area.
The Dowa District Council allocated K23 million in the 2020-2021 financial year for the construction of James CDSS to reduce the distance covered by students, which is about 10 to 12 kilometers to Nanthomba CDSS and Robert Blake Night secondary school located at the Dowa boma.
However, Senior Group James noticed that the construction was taking too long and started following up with the Dowa District Council.
Despite visiting the council five times, the promises were the same, and no progress was made.
Chief Chiwere, in consultation with Senior GVH Mwanza and Ulaya, decided to move the school block construction project from Senior GVH James’ village to Kapumphu near Kantayeni village.
This decision did not sit well with Senior GVH James, who protested heavily, stating that the council allocated funds for the construction of a school block in his village.
Kamphangala has asked Minister of Local Government Richard Chimwendo Banda to intervene and reinstate Senior Group James to his position. He praised Senior GVH James for his courage in following up on the K23 million school block construction project and encouraged others in the district to emulate his example.
Kamphangala also highlighted other projects in the District Development Plan (DDP) of 2020-2021 that need to be followed up.
Kamphangala urged communities surrounding these projects to hold duty bearers accountable for progress made, citing concerns that millions of taxpayers’ money might have been misused.
