The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has trained 229 Civic and Voter Education Assistants to prepare for next year’s general elections.
These temporary staff will be deployed across all constituencies to conduct civic and voter education, playing a crucial role in combating voter apathy.
According to MEC Commissioner Francis Kasaira, who also chairs the media and civic education committee, these officers are vital in providing accurate information and encouraging citizens to exercise their right to vote.
“They are our foot soldiers, stationed in each constituency to engage with the people and promote voter participation,” he emphasized.
Kasaira stressed that the assistants must remain committed and non-partisan to ensure a high turnout during elections.
“We need motivated individuals who can effectively serve their constituencies,” he added.
Participant Timothy Mdolo from Dowa North Constituency praised the training, saying it equipped them with knowledge on conducting civic and voter education to prevent voter apathy.
“This training will enable us to encourage more people to vote, shaping the country’s future,” Mdolo said.
The training, held in Mponela, Dowa, drew participants from various districts, including Dowa, Salima, Lilongwe, Nkhotakota, Mchinji, Kasungu, Mzimba, Karonga, and Chitipa. Topics covered included electoral laws, voter registration, electoral cycles, processes, and related offenses.
