Kamphangala Joins Mary Chilima in Calling for Commission of Inquiry
Rodgers Kamphangala, a Malawi Congress Party (MCP) member from Mvera in Dowa district, has joined Mary Nkhamanyachi Chilima, wife of the late Vice President Saulosi Chilima, in demanding that President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera establish a commission of inquiry into Chilima’s death.
In her first Facebook post since her husband’s tragic plane crash on June 10, 2024, in the Chikangawa forest, Mzimba district, Mary Chilima appealed to concerned Malawians to help seek justice for her husband’s death.
Kamphangala expressed solidarity with Mary Chilima, stating that Malawians share her grief and will continue to demand truth until justice is served.
Kamphangala noted that Mary Chilima’s silence had led many to believe she supported the MCP government’s stance against mourning Chilima, lest it be seen as politicizing his death. However, now that she has spoken out, Malawians will join her in pressuring President Chakwera to institute a commission of inquiry.
The Chilima family has also written to various political parties in Malawi, including the DPP, MCP, AFORD, and UTM, urging them to refrain from exploiting Dr. Chilima’s legacy for political gain.
Sean Chilima, Dr. Chilima’s son, emphasized that his father’s death will not bring economic growth or stability and warned against using his name to garner votes or sympathy.
Kamphangala called on MCP members to demand justice and a commission of inquiry, drawing parallels with past tragedies, including the 1983 murders of Dick Matenje, Aaron Gadama, Twaibu Sangala, and David Chiwanga by the MCP under Kamuzu Banda.
