UDF Convention Chair Resigns Amid Controversy Over MCP Invitation
Aisha Mambo Adams, the Convention Chairperson of the United Democratic Front (UDF), has resigned from her position, citing sorrow and humility amidst internal and external pressure.
The controversy surrounds the UDF’s decision to invite the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to its elective convention, which many supporters believe was made in exchange for financial gain.
Adams expressed her gratitude to the UDF Secretary General, NEC, and membership for trusting her with the position, and assured her loyalty to the party.
However, political activist Bon Kalindo criticized the UDF’s decision, stating it undermines the party’s democratic values and may lead to chaos and violence.
Kalindo argued that the MCP’s influence and financial power have already swayed some opposition members, and warned that the UDF’s decision may have far-reaching consequences in the 2025 elections.
On the other hand, MCP supporter Rodgers Kamphangala acknowledged the challenges ahead, admitting that the MCP alone cannot secure a majority win.
The UDF’s history in Malawi is rooted in its fight for democracy, with former President Dr. Bakili Muluzi being a respected figure in this struggle.
However, the current controversy threatens to tarnish this legacy and create divisions within the party.
