Dr. George Chaponda, Leader of the Opposition, delivered a blistering critique of the government’s handling of the fifth meeting of the fiftieth session of Parliament on September 20, 2024.

He accused the government of deliberately arranging the meeting to frustrate the opposition, highlighting what he called a “staggering level of incompetence” among cabinet ministers.

Chaponda expressed frustration with the administration’s failure to tackle pressing issues facing citizens.

“It is clear that this meeting was arranged to frustrate the opposition, This reflects a staggering level of incompetence among cabinet ministers and the government.”

Despite his criticisms, Chaponda assured the government that the opposition’s efforts would not end with this session.

He also voiced disappointment with the legislative process, noting that important bills were passed with minimal consultation and scrutiny due to the government’s failure to follow proper notice procedures.

“We passed these bills, but almost all met the minimum seven-day notice requirement, not the twenty-eight-day notice requirement.”

This shortened notice period limited Parliament’s ability to review bills and consult stakeholders thoroughly.

Chaponda’s remarks reflect deepening tensions between the government and opposition, with concerns over the administration’s approach to legislation and its failure to address Malawian challenges.

His statements signal continued resistance and heightened scrutiny ahead of the mid-year budget review.
