250 Aford Members Defect to National Development Party
In a significant shift in Malawi’s political landscape, 250 members of the Alliance for Democracy (Aford), including District Chairperson Mackenzie Malema, have joined the newly formed National Development Party (NDP) led by Frank Mwenefumbo.
Malema cited NDP’s active presence on the ground as the reason for his defection, stating.
“I have exercised my right to join the NDP because I want to be active in politics, not remain dormant.”
Patrick Kishombe, former chairperson of Karonga District Council, also joined NDP, praising Mwenefumbo’s leadership and developmental plans. Kishombe highlighted Mwenefumbo’s successful tenure as Minister of Agriculture during Bingu Mutharika’s administration, noting that there was no hunger during that time.
NDP’s National Director of Elections, Sherbourne Mchizi, welcomed the new members, saying their defection reflects trust and confidence in the party.
“We are a new party here to stay, and the joining of new members will help us build a strong grassroots base,” he explained.
Mchizi emphasized that the party belongs to no individual, urging members to welcome new supporters.
The defection includes members from regional and district committees of AFORD, as well as members from constituency levels in Karonga Central and Karonga Town constituencies. This move is expected to bolster NDP’s presence in the region.
While NDP faces challenges in other regions, the party’s growth in Malawi is notable. With elections approaching, NDP’s expansion may impact the political landscape.
