Former First Lady of Zambia Maureen Mwanawasa has died
Maureen Mwanawasa, the former First Lady of Zambia, has passed away after being admitted to Maina Soko Medical Centre. She was the wife of the late third Republican President, Levy Patrick Mwanawasa.
Born on April 28, 1963, in Kabwe, Zambia, Mrs. Mwanawasa had a distinguished career in law and community service. She earned her degree in Law from the University of Zambia, pursued postgraduate studies at the Institute for Advanced Legal Studies, and obtained a Master’s in International Business Administration from Edith Cowan University.
Throughout her life, Mrs. Mwanawasa was dedicated to various causes. In 2002, she founded the Maureen Mwanawasa Community Initiative, which focused on community development. Her contributions extended to numerous boards and organizations, including the Australian Institute Business Trust in Zambia, the Law Association of Zambia, the Zambia Association for High Value Crops, and the Female Lawyers Association of Zambia. She was also involved with the Women Law Society in the UK and the Zambia Women Football Association.
Mrs. Mwanawasa served as a council member for the Women’s Rights Committee, the Law Association of Zambia, and the University Women’s Association. Her efforts earned her several prestigious awards, including the International Hope Award from World Vision in 2006 and the John Thompson Legacy of a Dream Award from Georgetown University in 2007.
Her passing is a significant loss to Zambia and to all who were touched by her work and dedication.
